No matter where you may be in the world, Celtic names have been a rising trend since the 1980s. Breton, Welsh and Cornish are Brythonic languages. These names are originated from Brittany, Wales and Cornwall respectively, and these 3 nations make up half of the Celtic Nations, along with Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man. These names date back centuries and some have connections to that country’s lore and legends which entices people from all over the world to use them.
In 1865, the first Welsh arrived in Patagonia. They had migrated to protect their native Welsh culture and language, which they considered to be threatened in Wales. This contributed to Brythonic names, and Welsh names, in particular, to increase in popularity over the world, and there’s still a thriving Welsh community in Patagonia today!
For today’s blog, I’ve teamed up with my naming friend Siriol to create this stunning list of 20 uncommon Breton, Welsh & Cornish baby names for both boys and girls that need to make their way onto your baby name list!
A little bit about Siriol:

Tips for choosing a name
Below I have assembled a list of some things to consider to help guide you when trying to narrow down that perfect name for your little one.
- Are there any negative associations with this name?
- What will the Initials be?
- How will the name be perceived when your child grows up?
- Does it sound too far outside the box?
- Does it sound too common?
- Do you want the name to have a nickname?
- Is there someone in your circle that already has the name?
- Do you even care for the meaning behind the name?
You will have many opinions thrown your way about the names you have selected, and this may cause you to second guess yourself. Sometimes it can be good to have somebody around to discuss your choices, but ultimately it should come down to your own decision. If you are someone that is easily influenced by others’ opinions, the best advice I can give is to keep it a secret. No one needs to know until your little one arrives.
