Roadkill hits Digital platforms and VOD May 23

A thief operating along the highways of rural Australia gets caught in the crossfires of an ongoing police investigation after he mugs a serial killer.

Australian independent cinema has always been strong from shoe string budgets to full blown productions, the quality is always there. Roadkill follows that trend with a slightly grungey asthetic that echoes back to the Australian New Wave.

Roadkill was primarily filmed in Renmark; the cast and crew lived on location at a farmhouse during the shoot and travelled all over the Riverland to capture as much of the stunning scenery as possible. Other locations included the Gaslight Tavern, Offices in Norwood and West Richmond, Lowbank Lutheran Church, Salem Lutheran Church, Wellington and Murray Bridge.

Production had to overcome some huge hurdles including a plane crash when Tim Whitrow, who had flown in to the set oin his small airplane to help with catering crashed at 160 km per hour only 100 metres from set. Members of the crew including his brother (James Whitrow), nephew (Alexander Whitrow) and mother (Sue Whitrow) ran to the wreck, already believing he was dead. He was found in the wreckage barely clinging to life. The crew removed him from the aircraft and kept him breathing until the ambulances arrived. Tim was taken to the Riverland General Hospital where he was then flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH). Tim broke twelve ribs and his sternum, had his hear bruised and lost one of his feet as a result of his injuries. He was in the intensive care unit at the RAH for several days but otherwise made a full recovery.

The soundtrack composer, Yurii Radko, is based in Ukraine and in April 2022, during discussion about his availability, he said, “I am almost always in touch, but sometimes I have to hide in a bomb shelter when there are missile strikes because I am from Ukraine. There is a war in my country now”.

However despite all this the movie was completed and has enjoyed great succes so far, and rightly so.

Like a modern-day Highwayman, Connor Shelby spends his days on the isolated highways of rural Australia stealing from unsuspecting victims. He justifies his actions by saving his earnings in the hope of taking the love of his life, Lucy Miller, out of the harsh and unforgiving Australian outback. Across the country, in his ‘quest from God’, a serial killer moves from town-to-town executing those he believes to be ‘sinful’. Hot on his trail are Detectives Albert and Ernest, driven and logical, the pair follow the trail of bodies in an attempt to find and stop the brutal killer. Their hunt brings them to the South Australian town of Renmark, Connor’s current refuge. After two young men report being mugged on the highway, the detectives investigate and discover the two cases may be closer to one another than he first realized. After having his identity exposed, Connor’s hunt for redemption, justice and most importantly, revenge, begins.
