How to Watch Women Talking?: Women Talking is an American drama written and directed by Sarah Polley. The Canadian actress turned filmmaker is known for her directorial debut Away from Her in 2006, which won her the Best Director award at the Canadian Screen Awards. Polley’s Women Talking is based on the 2018’s novel of the same name by Miriam Toews.
Set in 2010, in an isolated Mennonite colony, the film’s premise follows the story of eight women reconciling their reality with their faith after a bone-chilling, horrifying revelation that the men in their community have drugged and raped the women at night for years, comes to the surface.
Inspired by the real-life events at the Manitoba Colony in Bolivia, the film has received incredible praise and appreciation for its screenplay and direction.
Named one of the top ten films of the year 2022 by the National Board of Review and American Film Institute, the film has also been praised for its score and outstanding performance from the well-rounded cast. The film also champions a most-women cast and crew with members like composer Hildur Guðnadóttir (known for her work on the HBO miniseries Chernobyl (2019) that won her a primetime Emmy Award, a BAFTA TV award, and a Grammy) plays a vital part in uplifting this chamber-piece to great heights.
Sarah Polley’s Women Talking holds an approval rating of 89% on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes based on 171 reviews. The critics have mentioned “its message is valuable and effectively delivered.” to describe the film.
The real selling point of Women Talking has o be its spectacular cast. The ensemble includes Rooney Mara as Ona and Claire Foy as Salome, while also having the always-brilliant Jessie Buckley playing the role of Mariche.
