‘Carmen’ Trailer: Oscar-nominated Paul Mescal Stars In A Soulful Opera Adaptation

Sony Pictures Classics has just released the official trailer for the upcoming romantic musical film ‘Carmen,’ starring Jon M. Chu’s In The Heights actor Melissa Barrera in the titular role along with Aftersun (2022) glowing star Paul Mescal. The new trailer gives a peek into the passionate romance between two impassioned lovers among the breathtaking, sun-drenched landscapes.

The director Benjamin Millepied mentioned this 2023 film as a complete re-imagining of Bizet’s iconic opera. It ignores the opera’s plot and setting and brings the soulfulness found in all its adaptations over the years. The screenplay by Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Loïc Barrère promises the same passion prevalent in its subsequent adaptations.

The trailer brings significant attention to two of the film’s aspects – an arresting score by Nicholas Britell (known for his works in Moonlight and Succession) besides the stunning cinematography by Jörg Widmer. It is safe to say that the new trailer promises a gorgeous cinematic experience in the coming months.

Melissa Barrera plays the titular role of Carmen, who travels from the Mexican desert to Los Angeles in the quest for freedom, love, and recognition. Besides her recent role in the horror blockbuster Scream VI, she has also starred in In the Heights, a peppy adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s stage musical.

Her co-star, Paul Mescal, is currently riding on the waves of popularity with his recent Oscar nomination for Charlotte Wells-directorial Aftersun. The new musical will show him showing off his dancing jobs with the intimacy he has brought to the screen through his previous roles.

The film has its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2022. It is set to be theatrically released on April 21 in New York & Los Angeles.
